Avoiding a litigated divorce can protect your health

On Behalf of Taylor-Made Solutions, PLLC | Jul 3, 2024 | Divorce

There is generally going to be an upsetting element to any divorce. A couple may separate despite still feeling fond of one another. Divorce signifies the end of a chapter in life. Nonetheless, divorce also presents a new beginning.

How couples go about their divorce has a significant impact on future happiness. A litigated divorce can take a long time and it causes stress. More than that, a highly contested divorce can increase the likelihood of health issues. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

A peaceful divorce means better sleep

A litigated divorce is much more stressful. Divorce stress has been shown to increase the chances that a person develops depression significantly. Depression has been shown to increase the chances that someone suffers from insomnia. It’s a vicious cycle.

Collaborative approaches like mediation offer divorcing spouses a chance to break this cycle. They can eliminate both a lack of sleep and hopefully the likelihood of developing debilitating conditions like depression.

Reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease

Some of the statistics for divorce and the risk of heart attacks are astonishing. For example, studies suggest that divorced men are 250% more likely to have a heart attack than married men.

A similar trend can be found in women. Women going through their first divorce are 24% more likely to have a heart attack than married women. For women going through a second divorce, the likelihood of a heart attack increases by 77%. Reducing stress by utilizing collaborative divorce techniques significantly reduces these risks.

Having more information can help you get comfortable with collaborative approaches to divorce. Legal guidance is also beneficial when it comes to having a more peaceful divorce.
